For Llama Packers and Alpaca Hikers, Current and Future!

Interested in packing? Did you know that one llama can carry an entire campsite for a family of four?! Or that, although most people would think only of packing llamas, it's entirely feasible to throw a small pack on an alpaca for day or lunch hikes! Or maybe you will be taking your llamas or alpacas to shows this season and want to improve their performance skills?

We have scheduled our first pack clinic of 2008, to be held at Rocky Mountain Llamas, just north of Boulder, CO. This clinic covers selecting and training a pack llama, using a pack string, and includes a full-day hands-on lunch hike with numerous stream crossings to give you and your llama some first-hand experience.

2010 Pack Clinics (Two Days):

  • Saturday, May 15   (Day 1: training)
Sunday, May 15     (Day 2: hiking)

  • Saturday, June 26   (Day 1: training)
Sunday, June 27     (Day 2: hiking)

  • Saturday, July 17   (Day 1: training)
Sunday, July 18     (Day 2: hiking)

  • Saturday, August 28   (Day 1: training)
Sunday, August 29     (Day 2: hiking)

Private training is also available. Contact us to schedule for here or at your Denver-metro location.

      Notes:

  • In the event of bad weather, the clinic will be rescheduled. Contact us to confirm alternate dates.
  • You can leave your animal overnight with us.
  • Both days begin at 9:00 a.m. and end around 5:00 p.m.
  • There are many excellent restaurants and motels in the area should you need overnight accommodations.

Fees:

  • Hands-on participants are coached while working directly with the animals, and may bring an animal of their own if they wish or use one of ours. Fee: $125.00

  • Observers have ample opportunity to ask questions, but learn primarily by watching and listening. Fee: $85.00
Note: Couples who attend, one as a participant and one as an observer, may exchange positions in the afternoon after lunch. Fee for two: $210

The clinic begins both days at 9:00 a.m. and finishes around 5:00 p.m. Please plan to arrive at 8:30 a.m., especially if you are bringing a lama. Morning refreshments are provided. There is a one-hour lunch break, during which lama training and packing are likely to remain the topics of discussion. If there are areas that are of special interest to you, or that you would like to cover in greater depth, please don’t hesitate to ask. Better yet, let us know your special interests or needs when you register.

On Sunday, we hike up the Lyons Gulch trail, encountering a varied terrain with numerous and varied stream crossings, which will you both you and your lama valuable experience. We stake the lamas in a large meadow while we eat our lunches, and then we hike back down.
